It is an obligation upon the man who hears the call to prayer to answer the call and pray with the Jamaa‘ah (congregation), because congregational prayer is an obligation upon men – according to the preponderant opinion of the scholars – unless he has some excuse. So the person with an excuse can pray by himself and does not need to repeat his prayer. If the Muslim did in fact have an excuse, then he should not start the prayer as soon as he hears the Athaan, since the Athaan merely indicates the time's arrival. That is at the beginning of the prayer time. Some of the scholars disliked engaging in the prayer as soon as the time begins. Also, praying during the Athaan surely causes one to miss the merit of repeating the words of the Athaan and of reciting the Du‘aa’ (supplication) after it, which was narrated by the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam. However, whoever prays during the Athaan is not required to repeat the prayer because he prayed after entering its time, the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: "
