Forbidding raising of hands during prayer
Anas ibn Maalik, may Allaah be pleased with him, reported that the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: “As if I am among a people who will come after me who will raise their hands in the prayer like the tails of horses.” Is it impermissible to raise one's hands during Takbeer? Does raising hands after Takbeer invalidate the prayer? Is raising hands after Takbeer considered a religious innovation but does not invalidate the prayer? We leave the matter for you to make clear for us. May Allaah have mercy on us and you.

The famous narrations of this Hadeeth highlight that the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said these words to his Companions, may Allaah be pleased with them. Other versions of this narration have shed light on the forbidden type of raising hands during prayer. This narration clarified that the Companions used to move their two palms when ending the prayer towards the right and the left, so the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, prohibited them from doing that. As for raising the hands during Takbeerat Al-'Ihraam (i.e. Opening Takbeerah) or before or after the Rukoo‘ (i.e. bowing), it is a reported act of Sunnah as is cited in Saheeh Al-Bukhaari and Saheeh Muslim from the Hadeeth of Allaah Knows best.
